Songs in a Storm
By Nik Way
All night the sound had
come back again,
and again falls
this quiet, persistent rain.
– ‘The Rain’ by Robert Creeley
I placed my mugs and cups under all
the leaks that night,
each collecting drops, each the
lone string of a symphonic sound.
Wet splatters on my forehead woke me, drips had
killed dreams, not so these drops in mugs and cups; they come
on in waves and back
in harmonies. This shower I welcome in again,
a water orchestra pouring down and
I conduct the drops again
until one mug fills and falls
spills cold water over this
drying shoe. A deluge spills them all. The orchestra goes quiet.
One by one I pick up each fallen mug and cup, persistent,
I reset them on the sodden carpet to catch the rain.
