Songs in a Storm

By Nik Way

All night the sound had

come back again,

and again falls

this quiet, persistent rain.

–          ‘The Rain’ by Robert Creeley

I placed my mugs and cups under all

the leaks that night,

each collecting drops, each the

lone string of a symphonic sound.

Wet splatters on my forehead woke me, drips had

killed dreams, not so these drops in mugs and cups; they come

on in waves and back

in harmonies. This shower I welcome in again,

a water orchestra pouring down and

I conduct the drops again

until one mug fills and falls

spills cold water over this

drying shoe. A deluge spills them all. The orchestra goes quiet.

One by one I pick up each fallen mug and cup, persistent,

I reset them on the sodden carpet to catch the rain.

Nik Way

Nik Way writes, acts, directs and occasionally does some work for his degree. He has been known to shave his head for a part and undress during poetry readings. In 2013 he was shortlisted for the Young Poet Laureate of London. He is currently a member of the Roundhouse Poetry Collective 2014/15. Broadway Baby described his play Last Supper as “thought-provoking and poignant”.

He (barely ever) maintains a blog at www.nikofway.wordpress.com and (fairly frequently) tweets from @NikWay
